Observing Ego: 2008...
February 1, 2008
Here's the deal, I spent the good portion of this year putting in place a very detailed plan (then christened "Vision: 2007"), to once again un-employ myself to free myself to end my professional life and begin a fully artistic one. I actually began the execution phase, submitting my resignation, and gritting my teeth against the poverty to come. Part of the gameplan was to pick up a part-time job, either at a gym or bookstore, to cover some expenses and ward off the need for full time employment. Much to my surprise, my company gave me a counter offer to work part-time for a new client, the Government Accountability Office. It is perfect in so many ways, but also very different from what I had prepared for.
This option took me by surprise, and I took it, knowing I'd need to rethink my gameplan. Even at part-time, I'm still in a challenging work environment, and in some ways being part-time ramps up the energy required. So, at the moment, my challenge is to focus my efforts on creating two distinct "work weeks", where I can do my best in both my professional and creative work, and the past few weeks have shown me it won't happen on its own.
This site will be one of the tools I use, hence the title "Observing Ego", starting with getting the daily journal up and running, I find its an energizing thing to know others can drop in unannounced to see what I'm up to. Another tool will be to create a list of goals, with attendant success metrics, to help me keep track of the months to come. Time has a way of using itself if you don't slap it around a little so that it knows who's boss.
